Soil’s Deep Virtue: Co‑existing with the Forest
March 4, 2023The building sits at the foot of Mount Ta Park and was designed by architect Hua Li of Ji·Architecture. Originally a quarry, the site once featured sheer rock walls that, in winter, created a bleak landscape alongside wild locust trees. To preserve the original terrain and sense of place, the architect anchored the building’s form to the natural elements on site, intervening minimally and showing respect for every rock and every tree. The natural topography was used to integrate roof planes with terraces. If “the best time to plant a tree was ten years ago,” then here—after nearly a decade of maturation—the building has become completely integrated with its environment. Wild locust trees weave freely through the structure, mutually sustaining each other and bearing witness together.
This is another project by Hua Li at mid‑slope of Mount Ta Park, set within a forested landscape. Again, the architect intervened minimally to protect existing trees. The building branches into three spatial fingers, each oriented toward a different urban vista—Liugong Island, the harbor, and Huancuilou Tower. The structure, partially embedded in the hillside, creates visual connections with the city.
